TMD/TMJ Treatment

Relieving Pain. Restoring Health.

Do you suffer from frequent headaches? Neck and back pain? Tingling or numbness in your fingers? The cause may be your jaw. More specifically, the misalignment of your jaw.

If you have an uneven bite, missing teeth, or crooked teeth, your jaw may not be in proper alignment. When you bite or chew, your muscles have to work harder to bring the teeth together. If you clench or grind your teeth, the strain only increases. The resulting painful symptoms are attributed to TMJ Disorder.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

TMJ Disorder symptoms can include:

  • Worn teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Sore muscles
  • Painful jaw joints
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck, back and shoulder pain
  • Clicking, popping or locking jaw
  • Tingling/numbness in the fingers
  • Ear pain
  • Dizziness
  • Teeth grinding/jaw clenching

Diagnosis

Dr. Joseph Bolil is trained in the diagnosis of TMD and provides the appropriate treatment to restore the jaw to comfort and relieve pain.

TEKscan Technology

Treatment begins with testing your bite using TEKscan technology. Unlike articulating paper, the TEKscan occlusal analyzer is a mylar wafer with hundreds of sensors for the most delicate and sophisticated test of occlusal contact. It gives us a three dimensional view of your bite. From this model, Dr. Bolil can determine what is working, and what isn’t.

NTI Tension Suppression

The next step is often use of the NTI Tension Suppression System. This system consists of a custom made device fitted to your front teeth and worn while sleeping. While in place, the NTI reduces neuromuscular activity (jaw clenching) by preventing any contact between the back molar or canine. The NTI is used as a diagnostic tool to determine your jaw’s ideal resting place.

We also often work with a chiropractor who is trained in, and teaches, Craniosacral therapy.

Treatment

After the data has been gathered, Dr. Bolil will determine the best treatment options to restore your jaw balance and relieve your pain.

Bite Splint

TMJ treatment commonly begins with bite splint therapy. This acrylic appliance is fabricated to fit snugly over either your upper or lower teeth. It becomes a temporary perfect bite for you. You will experience what a comfortable difference a stable, solid bite can make on your teeth, muscles and jaw. Many of the signs and symptoms of TMJ will likely diminish or even disappear. Recovery time depends on your situation and the signs and symptoms with which you started.

Night guards

Some patients with TMJ symptoms may be prescribed the use of a night guard or continued use of the NTI Tension Suppression System . If you grind your teeth at night, if your teeth are visibly worn down, or if you suffer from headaches or jaw pain, you may benefit from a protective night guard.

Dr. Bolil will fit you with a custom-made night guard appliance. The night guard will reduce the damage to your teeth from grinding or clenching during sleep, and reduce any grinding-related symptoms

Full Mouth Restoration

Dr. Bolil will restore teeth to raise or lower areas of the bite to put the jaw in proper alignment. A variety of dental restorations may be used to achieve this balance, including: veneers, crowns, onlays, dental implants and bridges.
